House Renovation Herne Hill

Having lived abroad for several years, this family of five was returning to their previous family home in Herne Hill. Whilst they already knew the house well, they wanted it to work differently for them now that the children were older and, importantly, they wanted the house to feel different and new when they returned.

The project focused on introducing colour, increasing storage and creating spaces that felt warm, welcoming and better suited to the family's current stage of life.

The Brief
Before moving abroad, the house had been designed very much with young children in mind. The palette was largely neutral and nothing felt overly precious.

On returning, the family wanted a shift in focus. There was a desire to invest in more permanent pieces, introduce colour throughout the home and create spaces that felt stylish for entertaining, practical for home working and able to provide significantly more storage.

Storing books and toys was a key part of the brief and needed to be addressed throughout the house.

The Design Challenge
The challenge was not only to make the house work differently for a family with older children, but also to create the feeling of returning to a home that felt refreshed and transformed.

Storage needed to be incorporated into as many areas as possible, while individual spaces required their own character and identity within the overall scheme.

The smallest child's bedroom presented a particular opportunity, as its compact size needed to feel like an asset rather than a limitation.

Our Approach
Colour played an important role throughout the project. The hall and central staircase were colour drenched in a soft pink, creating an immediately welcoming atmosphere from the moment you enter the house.

Bespoke shelving was incorporated wherever possible to provide storage for books and toys, helping to address one of the key requirements of the brief.

The smallest child's bedroom was designed as a cosy den, transforming the perception of the room and drawing attention away from its compact footprint.

On the ground floor, the cloakroom was completely transformed through the introduction of a striking mural wallpaper depicting Paris. The wallpaper had been sourced by the client whilst living there and proved to be the perfect choice for this intimate space.

Throughout the project, colour was used to create warmth and personality while allowing the rooms to feel both practical and welcoming.

The Result
The completed scheme has given the family a home that feels both familiar and new. Through the introduction of colour, additional storage and carefully considered design details, the house now works differently for this stage of family life whilst providing spaces for entertaining, home working and everyday living.

The result is a warm, welcoming home that reflects how the family lives today, whilst retaining the character of a much-loved house they were excited to return to.
