House in Clapham, SW12
This project focused on a new-build property in Clapham that was built in the style of a period house. Whilst the architecture has an overall modern feel, there are subtle references to more traditional design throughout the property. The scheme centred on introducing colour, texture and bespoke elements across the master bedroom, kitchen, dining area and living room, creating spaces that feel welcoming, comfortable and layered.
The Brief
The property already provided a blend of contemporary architecture and traditional influences, so the design needed to complement both aspects. Across the home, the focus was on introducing softness, texture and colour through carefully selected fabrics, furniture and furnishings.
In the master bedroom, there was no obvious architectural focal point, whilst in the kitchen the banquette seating area required soft furnishings to make it feel more comfortable and inviting. The dining and living spaces also provided opportunities to introduce colour, texture and statement pieces.
The Design Challenge
One of the main challenges in the master bedroom was the lack of an existing focal point within the room architecture. In addition, the low bay windows required a practical storage solution that would work comfortably within the space.
Within the kitchen, the banquette seating area featured a number of hard surfaces and required additional softness to create a more relaxed atmosphere.
Throughout the home, the challenge was to introduce interest, colour and texture while maintaining a cohesive overall feel.
Our Approach
As the master bedroom lacked an obvious focal point, the bed was given this role through a bespoke upholstered headboard in Truffle, covered in a beautiful Tori Murphy fabric. Three sets of coordinating pillows were layered onto the bed, including a striking embroidered fabric from GP & J Baker.
The scheme was completed with Ian Sanderson curtains, walls painted in Farrow & Ball Scallop and a built-in wardrobe finished in Whirlybird.
To address the storage requirements created by the low bay windows, a bespoke ottoman from Sparrow & Plumb was specified in Linwood's Croquet fabric in the Rhubarb colourway, providing practical storage while adding a playful element to the room.
In the kitchen, bespoke seat cushions and Roman blinds were added to the banquette seating area to soften the hard edges and create a more cosy and relaxing corner. Sanderson's Regency Aperigon in Brighton Blue/Linen was selected alongside cushions in Schumacher and Thibaut fabrics.
For the dining area, blue woven leather dining chairs from Birdie Fortescue introduced texture and colour, while a Karine armchair from Soho Home added a touch of glamour. A Renwick floor lamp in aged brass from Lights & Lamps provided a striking statement piece and soft evening lighting.
In the living room, colour was introduced through cushions from Flora Soames, Barney Gates and Love Your Home.
The Result
The finished scheme balances the property's modern character with carefully chosen traditional references. Through the use of bespoke upholstery, layered fabrics, textured furniture and considered colour choices, each space feels welcoming, comfortable and individual whilst remaining connected to the overall design of the home.
