Master Bedroom West Dulwich
This was a complete refurbishment including furniture, lighting and sift furnishings. We wanted to create a cosy and timeless space to relax in but still incorporating colour and texture and vintage pieces where possible. The two chests of drawers are from the 1930s, which is a period where the carpentry is simple and elegant so fits in beautifully in this Edwardian property. The build in wardrobes were already there so were just in need of a face lift and the tub chairs, also likely from the 1930s were in desperate need of reupholstery.
Our starting point was looking at what’s in the room with a beautiful fireplace consisting of blue, green and brown tiles, which became the basis of the room scheme. The walls are in Farrow&Ball London Stone with the ceiling in Oxford Stone, both having a wonderful natural and cosy feel. The wardrobe and mantle piece are both painted in F&B Oval Room Blue, which brings a wonderful contrast and lifts the space.
The ebony wall mirror is a wonderful Victorian shop mirror, which works beautifully with the period of the room, while black is grounding and matches the knurled wardrobe handles and black and silver Chanel print above the bed, the client’s signature fragrance.
This is a couple who read each night in bed so it was important to have task lights that would not disturb each other so these copper wall lights were fitted with a bespoke switch on the unit base so are easy to turn off once finished with.
The alcoves are different sizes so the 1930s oak chest of drawers were sourced from antique dealers to fill the spaces with as much storage as possible. The Roman blinds and cushions were bespoke and finished off with Samuels and Son piping for a more formal finish and polished brass MG&CO blind pulls add a wonderful finishing touch.
Due to the room layout it wasn’t possible to have bedside tables so two small bespoke wall hung cabinets were made to store books and were incorporated into the panelling on this wall, which created a lovely feature behind the bed.
And finally the 1930s tub chairs were an heirloom of the couple but badly in need of reupholstery so these were extensively refurbished with a modern comfort without losing any of the period charm by the talented team at The Chair Sanctuary. A vibrant, colour Romo fabric for the back was paired with a plain velvet for the seat and finished with with a lovely Flora Soames fabric for the cushions.
