Loft Extension Herne Hill
This loft extension was designed to create a new master bedroom and shower room for a family who wanted to relocate their bedroom into the loft, allowing their two teenage boys to take over the bedrooms below and gain a dedicated play room. The brief was simple: light, bright and minimal.
The design focuses on calm, uncluttered spaces, with carefully integrated storage, a restrained palette and practical details throughout both the bedroom and shower room.
The Brief
The family wanted to move the master bedroom into the newly created loft space in order to free up additional room elsewhere in the house.
The brief for both the bedroom and shower room was to create spaces that felt light, bright and minimal, whilst incorporating the storage required for everyday living.
The Design Challenge
As with many loft spaces, storage needed careful consideration to prevent the room from feeling cluttered.
The shower room also required practical storage solutions whilst maintaining the same clean and minimal feel as the bedroom.
Our Approach
Storage was integrated into the eaves to make the most of the available space and help keep the bedroom uncluttered and restful.
The walls were painted in a warm French Grey from Little Greene, creating a soft backdrop for the room. A bespoke Roman blind was introduced, with mustard accents echoed in the Margo Selby cushions to add subtle colour and interest.
Anglepoise wall lights were selected to provide practical bedside lighting for reading whilst also saving space on the small oak bedside tables.
The shower room followed the same light, bright and minimal brief. Two different tile designs were combined to create a simple but striking feature around the vanity wall and within the shower enclosure.
The focal point of the room became the bespoke vanity unit, painted in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue to complement the tiles and finished with a white marble top. This provided both practical storage and a strong visual feature. Additional storage was created through an alcove above the toilet, which was also painted in Hague Blue to tie the scheme together.
The Result
The completed loft extension provides a calm and uncluttered master suite that meets the brief for a light, bright and minimal space.
Through the use of integrated eaves storage, bespoke joinery, carefully selected colours and practical lighting, both the bedroom and shower room feel functional, considered and easy to live in, whilst making the most of the loft's available space.
